News article   Dancers show some sharp moves to keep village tradition going

VILLAGERS made a point of keeping a Sheffield Boxing Day tradition alive - with sword dancing outside a community pub.

members of the Grenoside Sword Dancers held their annual event outside the Old Harrow pub, to the delight of a large crowd.

The dance has been performed on the same spot on Main Street in Grenoside for over a century.

Next year will see an important anniversary - the centenary of the visit of folk collector Cecil Sharp, who wrote about the dance for the first time in his national archive.

An extra special event is planned for 2010 - and is expected to attract an even bigger crowd than this year.
