SDU 2010 hosted by Grenoside Sword Dancers

SDU 2010 - "Grenoside - 100 years since Sharp!"

The event will take place on the weekend 15th, 16th, 17th October 2010.

The main dancing day will be on Saturday 16th October 2010.

As well as being the SDU festival and competition this event will commemorate Cecil Sharp's visit to Swalwell, Earsdon, Kirby Malzeard, Abbots Bromley and Grenoside where he notated the 5 dances that comprised his book "Sword Dances of Northern England Vol 1."

Format of the Event

There will be over 20 teams competing or performing.

Dance Spots

The SDU competition in Grenoside will be based on our annual Village Traipse whereby teams will dance in a number of different locations throughout the village. The chosen spots are the Old Harrow Inn, The Old Red Lion, Methodist Church Hall, and an informal dance spot on the Green. All dance spots are within short walking distance of each other. There 3 tours of dance teams which will circulate between the main dance spots. Tours will commence at 11:00am and finish at 3:00pm with a short break for lunch.

The Competition

Teams can attend this event whether they wish to compete or not.

There is a Junior category and an Adult category, and teams may present more than one sword dance during the day.

At Grenoside SDU there will also be a special prize for teams reviving a sword dance that is currently not performed.

There will be a judge at each spot who will make an assessment of teams wishing to compete.

We will also ask the hosts and villagers at the various dance spots to make an award for their favourite team. This will be purely based on their personal enjoyment.

During the Traipse the Grenoside Sword Dancers will be your hosts and guides and will not be dancing.
